Tapis rouge
NADIA BEUGRÉ
What does the red carpet that is rolled out for the most powerful in Africa and around the world cover? Tapis rouge harshly highlights the dark "underbelly" of our societies: those left out of the picture, the exploited ones, like these women and children working in the mines whom Nadia met in Burkina Faso.
Created in the framework of the Avignon festival "Sujets à vif", as a duet between Nadia Beugré and the composer and guitarist Seb Martel, the piece expanded with the joining of dancer Adonis Nebié. The red carpet of the title is the modern incarnation of a long tradition: that of tracing a sacred trail, isolated from the earth, which already allowed the ancient clergy to avoid all symbolic contact with the lower world. Beugré’s Tapis rouge explores instead what is hidden under the fabric.
